Boone wins Tri-County League Babe Ruth Championship

2018 Tri-County Babe Ruth Junior Champions

In the final game of the Tri-County Junior Babe Ruth league double elimination bracket, on Tuesday night, the Daniel Boone Mavriks faced off against Boyertown.  Boone had battled through the losers bracket going 5-1 since the tournament began on Thursday night.  That road to the Championship game included a dramatice come-from-behind win against Boyertown just 24 hours earlier, giving both teams one loss and setting up the winner take all final.

Boone won the coin toss and chose to be the home team.  After allowing Boyertown to score a run in the top of the first, Boone jumped out quickly scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning and 3 more in the bottom of the second inning, to take an early 7-1 lead.  Tyler Kay and Gio DiNenna each had clutch two run singles in the first with two out. Ryan Woomer followed with a two run single in the second, then scored on a wild pitch.

Boyertown scored 4 runs in the third inning to tighten the game at 7-5.  Hayden Hall pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing only 1 run.  The Mavriks began to expand the lead in the fourth when Cory Miller and Cam Hirshman scored on a Woomer double.  Three batters later, a Kyle Vonderlinden sac fly made the score 10-5.

Boyertown scored a lone run in the 5th, but again Boone answered back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th and another run in the bottom of the 6th, to get the score to 13-6.  Although Boyertown's first two batters reached base in the 7th inning, they did not advance, on a pop fly to short anda strike out.  With two outs, Daniel Boone was finally able to celebrate as Ethan Kraycik caught a pop fly at second base to end the game and clinch the Championship.

The entire roster of this team contributed to an exhausting 9 days of baseball, including the final two games of the regular season.  In that 9 day stretch, the squad had 7 wins and just 2 losses, to complete the season with a 13-7-1 record.

In addition to the players previously mentioned, the roster included, Anthony Capone, Jared Miller, Thomas Ellis, Andrew Amilcar, Ryan Detwiler, Jamison Pence and Logan Conlon.  The season and this championship were a complete team effort.

Babe Ruth rallies to keep Championship Hopes Alive

Trailing 11-5 after 5 innings, and feeling the grind of playing 8 games in the last 8 days, the Mavriks were near the end of their already successful season.  But with a late burst of energy, the squad pushed across 3 runs in the top of the 6th on a pair of singles, a pair of walks, and a hit by pitch.  WIth Boyertown scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the 6th, Boone entered their final at bat trailing 12-8.  The team did not quit.  With 2 out and 2 runners on, the Mavs were still down four.  Anthony Capone kept it going with a double scoring both runners and cutting the deficit in half.  Kyle Vonderlinden follwed with a walk and a stolen base putting the tying run at second base.  Tyler Kay's clutch single brought in Vonderlinden to tie the game at 12.  The rally continued with a Hayden Hall single on the third base line, a 2 run single by Jared Miller and another clutch hit by Thomas Ellis to take a 14-12 lead, and complete the 6 run rally.

In the bottom of the 7th, Ryan Woomer took the mound to close the game.  After a lead off single, Woomer struck out the side to seal the victory.

Capone started the game on the mound, Vonderlinden threw 4 1/3 innings of strong relief to keep the game within reach.  Cory Miller pitched the sixth allowing no earned runs, to set up the final rally.

Cam Hirshman had 3 hits and scored two runs.  Ethan Kraycik added a hit and an RBI to the winning effort.

The team will now play in the "winner take all" championship game on Tuesday night, 7 pm at Boyertown Community Park.

Boone Babe Ruth hangs on against Berks Thunder

In the completion of the suspended game, the Boone Babe Ruth team preserved their lead in the bottom of the 7th inning to win the game and eliminate Berks Thunder.  With the win, Boone advances to the championship, needing to beat the undefeated Boyertown "Black" team twice to bring home a title.

Ryan Woomer had two hits for the Mavriks, Kyle Vonderlinden drove in three runs, while Anthony Capone and Ethan Kraycik had 2 RBI each.  Hayden Hall and Cam Hirshman added hits for Boone.

Big Day for Boone Babe Ruth

After losing a well played game on Friday night, the Babe Ruth Mavriks found themselves in the loser's bracket on Saturday morning, needing to win to saty alive.  Twin Valley was the opponent for a 10 am game at Union Field.  Boone got an admirable pitching effort from Anthony Capone, Garrett Eisnhuth and Hayden Hall allowing just 4 hits, 7 walks and striking out 3, while surrendering just 5 runs to Twin Valley.  The Boone offense started slow but came alive in the bottom of the 6th plating 3 runs keyed by an Andrew Amilcar double and a sac fly by Hall to tie the game.  Entering the bottom of the 7th still tied, Boone's first two batters were retired, but with two out, Cory Miller took a hit by pitch, Cam Hirshman walked, followed by a short single by Ethan Kraycik to load the bases.  Anthony Capone walked the game off with a hard grounder to shortstop that Twin Valley was unable to handle as Miller scored the winning run.  The Maveriks advance to an evening matchup with the Boyertown White.

Although Boone took an early 6 run lead, the game became a scrappy back and forth affair.  Dylan Gass threw 3 solid innings, mid-game to keep the game within reach.  Boone trailed 11-9 after 6 innings, but erupted for 3 big runs in  the top of the 7th for a 12-11 lead (Thomas Ellis scored on Hirshman's bunt single, then a Ryan Woomer double scored Cory Miller and Hirshman).  Boyertown tied it in the bottom of the 7th at 12, sending the game to extra innings.  The Mavriks weren't going to be denied in the extra frame.  Capone took a pitch on the elbow, and ultimately came around to score after clutch singles by Kyle Vonderlinden and Jared Miller, to make the score 13-12.  Cory Miller shut down the middle of the Boyertown lineup in order to close the game in the bottom of the eigth for a dramatic finish.

The Babe Ruth squad is now one of just 3 team still alive and will play Berks Thunder at 6 pm on Sunday night at the Union Meadows East park behind Fork and Ale.  The winner advances to the championship.
